Why do Li Ion batteries like Sony's NP-BG1 camera battery have three contacts rather than two?

Many rechargeable batteries have 3 or even 4 contacts. For the most part they are used to sense the battery temperature. If the battery gets too hot the charger either shuts down for a while or switches to a slower charge rate.

It contains the Sony's NP-BG1 recharableable Li-ion battery pack.

I am glad it comes with a battery pack that lasts longer than a standard 2xAA but: 1. What is the lifetime of such a battery pack? How many reuses can i get out of it? 2. Are such Li-ion batteries or specially this Sony pack decent? Should i purchase a second battery pack and leave it on the shelf for a year when the 1st pack dies? I wouldn't bother buying a second battery at this stage, because the battery that comes supplied with it will allow up to 340 shots per charge (which is a lot more than what other batteries provide). I'm not sure of how many times a battery can be charged, but it would be quite a large number of times. However, the real downside to this battery, is that it takes a very long 4.5 hours to fully charge it. But, you CAN buy a 1.5 hour, fast charger (which is an extra and expensive cost).

Another very clever marketing idea from Sony, of course. If I were you, I would just use the one battery and takes steps to conserve it's life by turning off the LCD screen in- between shots, limit how long you review your images, and also limit your use of the flash. You can also turn off the LCD and use the viewfinder instead to compose your shots. Doing this, will give you lots more battery life. And make sure you give the battery a top up charge as often as possible. You don't have to wait for the battery to fully drain before you re-charge it.

Do you guys think a generic NP-BG1 battery not made by Sony, from China, for my digital camera, will blow up? It might. OEM batteries have on board circuitry that prevents over charging . ..

the usual cause of battery failure including battery explosions Spend the few extra dollars and consider it insurance Which lasts longer, Sony NP-FG1 or NP- BG1? The NP-BG1 came with digital camera, it doesnt last long. Want to replace it with np-fg1 but im not sure which last longer. Thanx in advanced.

They are the same rating (960mAh) so should last the same amount of time. The only difference between the two of note is the NP-FG1 supports the infoLITHIUM function which accurately displays power remaining on a compatible Cyber-shot camera. Resolved QuestionShow me another » Help with NP-BG1 lithium ion battery used in Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W35? The Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W35 uses rechargeable -BG1 lithium ion battery. I wanted to ask if we get disposable batteries (i.e. not the rechargeable batteries. Some call such batteries “use and throw ”) of the identical size to be used in the camera.

I can explain why I’m asking this. Suppose I’m on a trip somewhere and my battery goes kaput and I cannot recharge them. I have 3 options: 1.Keep the camera back in the case and bang my head against
the wall; 2.Keep a spare charged battery; 3.Always keep a pair of disposable batteries in case of such situations. I’m in no way going to choose the first option and as far as the second is concerned I feel that it would be expensive to purchase a pack of batteries for such once in a blue moon occasions. Please help me out of this dilemma. Sorry, that model does not use any size disposable batteries. There simply is not enough room in the camera, so they use a special proprietary battery.

Watch the internet camera stores for a sale on a second Sony NP-BG1. Also, Best Buy usually has a 10% off Memorial Day sale in the US. Or be very careful to charge your battery before each event. Good Luck If i have a sony cyber-shot with a lithium ion NP-BG1 battery, would this charger work? http://www.batteries-world.co.uk/batterychargers/buy-sony-np-bg1-charger.htm im unsure because this ISNT the charger that came with camera (i kinda lost the origional charger) so do you think this would work?

I have a Sony Cybershot DSC-W80 with the NP-BG1lithium ion battery . I lost my camera charger and the sony stores don't sell a charger for my specific camera's battery anymore. I was thinking of that thing where you charge an ipod with an onion, and it occurred to me that some genius out there might know a similar solution for camera chargers...anyone??? follow this link and get your money out, £14-£16 uk, took me three seconds to find that one, spend some time and look about you dont need a specific charger just one that will charge that battery.

How long do lithium batteries last, in a digital camrea? Hi i have a Sony NP-BG1 Lithium-ion battery , and im wondering how long would it last on an average.

I know it depends on usage and how much u recharge it really. But how long on average do they last? according to my manual, mine are supposed to last 350 images. But depending on viewing your pics, using the camera for a slideshow, etc. it could be less, but they last a very long time. Not sure how many charges they last, because I haven't been there yet.
